Why Sickle Cell Natural Remedies Focus on Antioxidants

The Science behind Moringa, Hibiscus and Vitamin C.

I’m often asked about natural approaches to managing sickle cell.

Moringa. Hibiscus tea. Chlorophyll drops. Vitamin C supplements.

These are some of the ones people name most often.

Many people are understandably cautious about medication and want to support their bodies in a more holistic way.

So here’s something important to understand.

The reason many of these remedies help is because they contain antioxidants.

That’s the key.

So what does that actually mean?

What are anti-oxidants and how do they help?

Well,

every cell in your body uses oxygen to make energy. But when oxygen is used, a small amount of it becomes unstable. These unstable molecules are called free radicals.

Free radicals can damage cell membranes and proteins in a process called oxidative stress.

In sickle cell, the level of oxidative stress is higher for 3 main reasons:

1) Sickle red cells break down more quickly, releasing iron into the bloodstream. Free iron can fuel the production of more reactive molecules.

2) Blood vessels can become blocked and then reopen. When oxygen rushes back into tissues, it creates bursts of free radicals.

3) Constant inflammation generates additional reactive molecules that contribute to oxidative stress.

Sickle red cells are already fragile. So when oxidative stress rises, it can further weaken their membranes, increase breakdown, and contribute to complications.

This is where antioxidants matter.

Antioxidants help neutralise free radicals before they cause more damage. Your body has its own antioxidant systems built in. But in sickle cell, that system can become overwhelmed.

That’s why antioxidant-rich foods and herbs are often discussed.

Moringa contains natural antioxidant compounds. Hibiscus tea does too. Dark leafy greens, which contain chlorophyll, are rich in antioxidants. Vitamin C is a well-known antioxidant that supports your body’s defence systems.

None of these should replace appropriate medical care.

Just think of them as adding an extra layer of protection from the damage sickle cell is constantly firing at you.

Anti-oxidants are like your bullet proof vest.

But they don't stop you from getting shot. That's what disease modifying treatments are for.

E.g Hydroxyurea, Endari and Exchange blood transfusions.

And then Bone Marrow Transplant and Gene Therapy would be like dropping a nuke on the sickle cell army!

The main point is this.

If you want to feel more in control of your health, then focus on eating foods that provide anti-oxidant protection.

But remember that being 'holistic' means considering everything that will improve your health. And that includes traditional evidence based medicine as well.

Stay Healthy,

Lewis
